If you’re like me, you want to capture authentic Christmas morning photos, and document your family’s day. You don’t want staged photos and you don’t want to be in the way. Here’s how to make the most of photographing Christmas morning, where you don’t get a do-over. Those reactions of your children unwrapping a favourite gift only happen once!

1.Before you start, make sure you consciously choose to not spend the morning with the phone in front of your face. Be there in real time too.

2.Stay in the one spot. Pick your spot carefully, (plan it out the day before), so you have the best view of the action.

3.Decide ahead of time which present you most want to capture each child opening. Which gift will have the best reaction?

4.Photograph what’s happening: be a “fly on the wall”. Don’t direct the action or ask them to look at the camera.

5.Let go and don’t expect it to be perfect. Just enjoy the moment!

Only take enough photos so you can remember how it felt. Your children will thank you for it later!
