Prints or Digitals?
What to do after your photo session…order prints or digitals? Many people think they “just want the digitals, thanks”, after their family photo session. This may be for many reasons:
- They want to share them on social media
- They can print them cheaper themselves
- They can make unlimited copies
- They don’t know what they want to do with them yet
Some things you may want to consider before ordering “just the digitals”:
1. How long will your file last?
Technology is constantly changing. Most computers now don’t have CD drives, and how long until USB drives are upgraded to other technology?
In the future, will files such as JPEGs still exist…..and will future technology be able to read them? Prints are a much safer option….you will always be able to view them! Did you ever spend an afternoon at your grandparents house, pouring over old photographs, finding out who is who, and exclaiming about how your Dad looked as a boy, your Mum’s funny haircut, or how the yard looked many years ago? You could do this because your grandparents (and their parents, etc) printed their photos. I am passionate about continuing this tradition, and encourage you to print the photos I take of your family.
Digital technology doesn’t last forever….files on digital media such as hard drives and USB’s eventually break down, and you get file corruption that looks like this:
2. You’re investing time and money in your session, why not your prints?
You spent so much time preparing for the session, getting the clothes right, organising everyone, making arrangements, having the session….why not ensure you have high quality prints from a professional printer? Before printing, I ensure the files are the right size for printing and for the medium (different measures are taken for prints versus canvas). My monitor is calibrated to the settings of the pro lab that I print with, to ensure the colours look just as they do on screen. The same level of care is not offered at high-volume print kiosks.
3. You Want Unlimited Copies
With every print you order, you receive the matching digital file. You can print these at the same size, as many times as you like, and share them on social media.
4. You’re Not Sure What To Do With Them
While you’re deciding….
- Why not choose a photo book, where you can have all your images from your session printed in a hard cover book with magazine-style pages?
- You could get your favourite 20 printed as 5×7″ prints
If you’re not sure what would look best in your house, or what size to print, I can help with that too! After your session, when showing you all the edited photos, we can discuss what will work in your home.
